Alegria is for sale The Story of AlegrķaAlegria has been our home for more than four years. The story of Alegria started when Tania and I crossed the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to Canada on board Mahina Tiare II. Mahina Tiare is a Hallberg Rassy 46. Her owners, John Neal and Amanda Swan make a living teaching prospective cruisers everything there is to know from knots and splices to storm tactics and how to prepare a boat for safe and comfortable cruising. Straight after this memorable trip, we went to the Hallberg Rassy open house weekend in Sweden. We test sailed both the HR39 and the HR42. The HR39 is obviously less expensive but we felt that the HR42 had a more comfortable and confidence inspiring motion at sea. Besides, the HR42 is roomier below decks and has two separate heads. We ordered the HR42. Alegria was fitted out for long distance cruising from the start. Armed with what we had just learned from John Neal as well as from the Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia, we sat down for two days with the Hallberg Rassy salesman to determine Alegria's specification. All extras were professionally installed by the yard. They did a superb job. In June 2001 we set sail from the HR yard in Ellös, Sweden. Alegria's travels since then are described in the logbook. She has been a wonderful home and a delight to sail. In June 2005 I accepted a 1 year contract to work in the oil industry again. We were in Panama at the time, but there is no place to store a boat on the hard on the Caribbean coast of Panama. So, we sailed to Cartagena, Colombia, where she stayed on the hard until Februari 2007. Our original plans were to continue cruising in July 2006, but plans have changed, and so we reluctantly decided to sell her. In March 2007 we sailed her to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In June 2007 she was transported as deck cargo on board MV Snoekgracht to Europe. She is now in Bruinisse, the Netherlands. This is a more convenient place for prospective buyers to view her. Why a Hallberg Rassy? Many experienced cruisers consider a Hallberg Rassy simply the best cruising boat in the world. They are admired for their seaworthiness, built quality, interior finish and timeless beauty. Frequently when a new HR model is launched it wins one or more "boat of the year" awards. The HR42 is a fast and comfortable passage maker. Have a look why John Neal chose a Hallberg Rassy for the third time in a row. Alegrķa's specificationFor information regarding the Hallberg Rassy 42 in general, it is best to refer to the Hallberg Rassy website. Have a look at the:
To this basic specification, we added a long list of extras with a total value of Euro 97,000. These were all designed to make her a safe and comfortable cruising boat. Alegrķa's conditionAlegria is in very good condition. I have always done maintenance myself, and I know what I am doing. I am a professional engineer and I have a diploma in yacht surveying from the IIMS. Prior to leaving her in Cartagena, I spent 3 weeks with the help of local labor to prepare her for long term storage on the hard. A custom full boat cover was fabricated to protect the deck from the elements. A dehumidifier is humming away in the interior to keep her smelling fresh and free of mildew. I left instructions with the yard for care and maintenance. A friend inspected her recently, and confirmed the yard is doing a good job.
